Reactivating the ScoreUnmastered Bones draws inspiration from Charles Mingus’ 1956 jazz suite, a political and anthropological manifesto unfolding across four musical movements. Extending Mingus’ structured improvisation to the asemic field, this artist’s book explores the absence of musical or linguistic scores, producing a sharp critique of humanity’s superiority complex as it unravels within a tangle of signs. The pages, taken from a flood-damaged paper mill, transform worn sheets into artifacts where water, wear, and chance create a liminal space between content and matter. Printed with exhausted toner and reworked in ink, pencil, and other media, the book embodies a compositional principle akin to Mingus’: reactivating materials to ignite the creative act.The pages of this artist book were first exhibited at Civico 23 Art Space, Salerno, 8–22 November 2025, and resist becoming a “second original,” emphasizing process, impermanence, and artistic exploration beyond symbolic or economic constraints.
