Laid down in New Albany, Indiana, in 1853, launched in 1856. He made trading flights along the Mississippi River. On September 27, 1862, the ship was acquired by the United States Army, converted into an armored warship, and assigned to the United States Navy base in St. Louis, Missouri. The crew of the ship was 106 people. From April 23, 1863 until the end of the war, the USS Choctaw served on the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Between April 29 and May 1, 1863 he participated in the shelling of Haines Bluff, Mississippi, during the battle with the Confederates at Grand Gulf. During this battle, the ship received 53 hits. From March 7 to May 15, 1864, the USS Choctaw took part in the operations to capture Fort De Russi, Louisiana.
